Greetings from the Africa Alliance. As you may be aware, the World Alliance has embarked
on a Partners in Progress initiative. This draws on professional resources within the global
movement for purposes of information sharing, research, and best practice lessons and
development with the ultimate aim of us being able to make more impact globally and
within our communities.
The Africa Alliance has been entrusted with assessing Civic Engagement for the above aim.
Initial findings will be presented to the Global Staff Team in March. We are in the process of
information gathering to determine the extent of the civic engagement activities through
YMCAs worldwide and as such will need your help with gathering information regarding the
civic engagement activities within your region. Our initial research indicates that countries
within your region conduct one or more projects which incorporate elements of civic
engagement as defined below.
From information already collected by the World Alliance, YMCA activities for Civic
Engagement have been classified under the following areas:
• Civic Education - the education of rights and duties of citizenship. In other words, it is the study
of government with a1en2on to the role of ci2zens 3 as opposed to external factors 3 in the
operation and oversight of government.
• Voter Education - education in support of the electoral process with a particular focus on the
"voter"
• Global Education - raising student awareness through education of human rights, peace and
• cooperation, economic justice and good governance on a global scale. Often including
volunteer exchange programmes.
• Globalisation - Awareness of the interconnected and interdependence of people across
geographical borders and the effect global influences have on the local community health,
environment, access to resources and financial stability.
As there are a number of countries actively involved with civic engagement projects, we ask your assistance in collating and consolidating the work within in your region. The following
YMCAs have been identified:
• England
• Estonia
• Sweden
• Wales
• Spain
Attached is a format developed to collect relevant information. I wish to introduce you to Christine Davis, our volunteer for communication who will be in touch with individual
YMCAs or designated contact persons to finalize the collection of information.
